Actress Eelyn Kok channels old-world glamour for her latest role

IN AN age where the spians are normally primped for a modern-day role in the typical local household or stepping into the shoes of a criminal investigator in the police department, Eelyn Kok's role in A Song To Remember - Song Qiao Er - stands out.

After all, Kok plays the leading songstress in a dance troupe set in Singapore in the '30s, donning shimmering cheongsams and boasting a slew of sparkling jewels and gems in order to flaunt her status and seduce the big wigs to sustain her lifestyle.

Throughout the four-month period of filming, Kok was decked out in a cheongsam almost daily. And while she said she liked the look, it's not something that you'll see her wear on "normal days". "It took me right back to the '30s and it helped me portray the character better. I think I might wear cheongsams during Chinese New Year but on normal days, it feels a bit tough to wear," said Kok.

But there's more to wearing a cheongsam than slipping into one. "When you wear a cheongsam, you have to do something to your hair, you have to pile on lots of accessories ... to make the look more complete," explained the 33-year-old actress. "If it's just a cheongsam, it's pretty dull because I once wore a short, modern-day cheongsam for Chinese New Year and I just felt that it didn't look that good without your hair done."

A Song To Remember marks Kok's third period drama serial (she was previously in Little Nyonya and Together). It's also a film to remember for Kok, who said she is "very happy with the outcome".

"It's quite a challenge to play someone in the '30s," she added.

After wrapping up the 30-parter, the affable actress has also felt the need to dress "more femininely". "While I was filming for this role, it made me feel rather feminine. The feeling is still there after we've wrapped the show.

Perhaps it's because of this role, I (still) feel the need to dress more (womanly)."

So, will she ever emulate the styling of old-world glamour in A Song To Remember?

"Of course I would try but it's really not easy, I think. (Laughs) You have to pick the right pieces so that once you wear it, people won't go: 'Oh that makes you look very mature'. You have to see how to mix and match."

Tell us more about your sense of style.
It's more comfortable and a bit girlish but I'm trying to become more feminine. Essentially, I always wear jeans and pants because it's more comfortable and you don't have to worry about exposing yourself. (Laughs) I'm trying to change to a different style which is more lady-like.

How has it evolved over the years?
I think for the most part of my years here, it has been the same. (Laughs) It's only recently that I tried to change a little because I got a bit bored of my own jeans-and-top style.

What are some of your favourite colours?
Red, green, pink, black and white.

You had to wear a cheongsam almost daily for A Song To Remember. Was it tough getting used to it?
It wasn't tough at all, actually. But while we were filming, it was really, really hot. We had this set in old Tan Tock Seng hospital: it's old and dilapidated. Lots of dust there (and) we didn't have much fresh air or wind.

What item in your wardrobe do you wear to death?
Can you see that this pair of jeans is well worn? (Laughs) I have a few pair of jeans mainly because they are easy to match. But then as I said, I'm pretty tired of wearing jeans all the time so I'm trying to look for other stuff.

What was your last purchase?
A white round-neck flare out top and a knitted blouse (I purchased online) a few days ago.

And your priciest?
To date, a black Miu Miu bag I got in Singapore a few months ago. I went for a more classic look so that it will last for quite some time. It's quite a big one actually. I've got this thing for big bags.

Who are some fashion icons you admire?
Alexa Chung. I like her dress sense.

Do you shop a lot locally?
I used to shop in Singapore but a few years back, I started shopping in Taiwan. Later, someone introduced online shopping to me. (Laughs) Recently, I bought something from Victoria's Secret. It's not lingerie but more of the daily wear. Another place (I shop at) is Gmarket; for more casual stuff.

People have long said that Singaporeans dress too casually. What would you say to that?
When I was strolling along Orchard Road, I would feel that way too. But, because I came from NUS' Arts And Social Sciences (faculty), my opinion would differ a bit because the people in the arts faculty will normally dress up. So, I would think that Singaporeans can still dress up. Today, if you take a walk along Orchard, there are more people taking the effort to dress up.

Immersing herself into character, Eelyn Kok introduced herself as "Song Qiao Er" in a sophisticated demure manner and said, "Everyone in the song and dance troupe calls me 'jie' (older sister in Mandarin), that's because all of them rely on me to make a living."

Now that filming has wrapped up, what are you currently up to these days?
I am doing rehearsals for a play - called Restore - in December. I've three rehearsals every Monday, Wednesday and Friday night and because the play is rather heavy and intense, I get very emotionally tired sometimes. After the play, I'm going for a short getaway to Bali. I really need to relax.

"Because my knees are a little problematic, I haven't been doing any stretching exercise such as yoga. There might be limitations but I'm looking forward to the dance classes. I hope that I'll be able to do a good job."
