Singapore, 4 September 2012 – Singapore Post’s latest set of stamp issue, Giant Pandas, celebrates the arrival of Kai Kai (凯凯) and Jia Jia (嘉嘉), the two giant pandas on loan to Singapore by the People’s Republic of China, as a result of an agreement inked in 2010 when both countries commemorated the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations. These two giant pandas will begin their 10-year stay in Singapore on 6 September 2012. Singapore is the ninth country to receive the loan of giant pandas from China since 1994.

Artistically illustrated in drawings by local international artiste, Edmund Chen Zhi Cai who is also SingPost’s stamp ambassador, this set of stamps depicts the various poses of Kai Kai and Jia Jia. For example, the S$2 stamp shows Kai Kai and Jia Jia playing with each other. First day cover will be cancelled with a special Giant Panda postmark specially designed by Edmund’s 12-year-old daughter, Yixin, and the folder cover of the Collectors’ Sheet is designed by his 21-year-old son, Yixi.

It is not easy to draw the pandas. Initially, I could not even differentiate the gender. Although pandas are in black and white, I have found that just for the colour black alone, there are many different shades. It is only through many attempts that I am finally satisfied with my work,” said Edmund. Edmund was also the designer for the Oriental Small-Clawed Otter stamp issue released last year.

Said Mr Woo Keng Leong, EVP/Head of Postal Services of SingPost: “This is indeed a major highlight in our stamp and philatelic calendar and we are excited with the stamp issue to commemorate the arrival of the adorable pandas, Kai Kai and Jia Jia. In fact, we paid considerable attention to the decision on the stamp denominations. A 50-cent denomination stamp was decided upon as it is the cost of sending a postcard while the 65-cent stamp represents the cost of sending a letter of not more than 20g, printed paper or small packet to the People’s Republic of China. The S$2 stamp can be used to send mail to any country.

Apart from pandas, other animals that had been featured in our Singapore stamps include Otters (2011 Oriental Small-Clawed Otter), Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot (2007 Definitives), the Dugong (2006 Undersea World), Banded Leaf Monkey (2007 Definitives), Malayan Pangolin (2007 Definitives), Cream-Coloured Giant Squirrel (2007 Definitives), Large Indian Civet (2007 Definitives), Common Palm Civet (2006 Care-for-Nature) etc.

Great pandas are known in China as a symbol of balance, due to their black and white coloring, reminiscent of yin and yang. I spotted this panda while visiting the Panda Research Centre outside of Chengdu. It was poised perfectly on this tree, truly demonstrating another type of balance!
