Interesting "what if" take on the origin and ancestors of humankind...if we could grow women this beautiful life would be a lot easier I think. I really like the contrast between the rough style of the ground and roots, and the smooth creamy texture of her skin.

HE HAILS from Chennai, India, some 3,000km from Singapore's sunny shores, but this has not stopped Praveen Kumar Radhakrishnan from producing a graphic novel based on the country's history.

The 28-year-old research-and- development engineer, who goes by the pen name Radkris, is the author of a new graphic-novel series, The Hunt For The Lion.

The first volume, The Hunt For The Lion: The Two Kings, borrows story elements from the tale of Sang Nila Utama, a prince who legendarily founded the kingdom of Singapura in 1299.

"I want people to feel that the prince can be anyone, that anyone can discover, and that people are always pushed by the purpose they have in life," he said.

In the comic, the prince is on a quest to expand his kingdom when he finds himself shipwrecked on an island in the South China Sea.

The tale then tells of the intense battles that unfold, including betrayals and a relentless haze.

The graphic novel was originally meant to be a documentary. About three years ago, Radkris was a student in an Italian-language class in Milan, where he is now based. A Russian classmate asked for his help in making a documentary about Singapore.

Even though the project fell through, he picked up the pieces and eventually decided on a graphic novel which provides an "optimal balance between visual and literary elements", said Radkris.

But a lot of research had to be done, which meant many hours spent at the National Library, the results of which the author hopes will show in his upcoming graphic novels.

Radkris aims to finish the six-part graphic-novel series in the next three years. Each volume is expected to be 200 pages long.

The first two issues of volume one - each 30 pages long - are available online at US$1.99 (S$2.50) per issue. Subsequent issues will be published monthly.

He revealed that the second volume will centre on colonial Singapore and the third on World War II.

Radkris' works are the latest in a growing number of graphic novels on Singapore, which include Scenegapore and Ten Sticks And One Rice, both released last November by Epigram Books.

The authors of Ten Sticks And One Rice, Oh Yong Hwee and Koh Hong Teng, said that, while they "did not set out to tell any Singapore history per se", they found the tales that they heard as kids from their parents and parents' friends became more "fascinating as (they grew) older and more mature".

Childhood memories seem to have had a similar effect on Radkris.

Although he is not a Singaporean, he has spent most of his summers here since 1992. The author continues to feel a connection to the country and is impressed by its development.

"Coming from India, I can see that Singapore has achieved much more, although it gained independence later.

"There are pluses and minuses, but India can learn a few lessons," he said.

What does your coffee choice say about you?

THE type of coffee you order may reveal more about your personality than you think.

Like your coffee black? Chances are that you are a purist whose virtues include patience and efficiency, but you can also be moody and inflexible.

That revelation is among the findings of a survey by Los Angeles-based psychologist Ramani Durvasula.

She conducted a survey on 1,000 coffee drinkers and connected the way people drank their cuppa to personality traits, PsychCentral.com reported.

The results were published in the book, You Are Why You Eat: Change Your Food Attitude, Change Your Life.

For the survey, respondents were given common scenarios, like waiting in a long queue, planning dinner parties or a typical weekend.

Survey participants were then asked to choose from a series of approaches to these scenarios.

The survey also asked if they drank coffee and what they typically ordered.

The research found that black-coffee drinkers were straightforward and no-nonsense individuals. Folk who usually requested double decaf, soya milk or extra foam tended to be more obsessive, controlling and detail-oriented.

The latte drinkers tended to be more neurotic and people-pleasing, while the instant-coffee drinkers were more likely to be procrastinators.

And those who order sweet drinks were the overgrown kids who retained the taste buds and sensibilities of children, and were young at heart, according to PsychCentral.com.

If you are on vacation or business during the last Saturday of August in Tokyo, you would be one of the luckiest visitors at the time. The Asakusa Samba Carnival is one of the most happening festivals in Japan that is celebrated on a very high note.

This beautiful event is said to be modelled after Rio de Janeiro’s famed “Carnivale” and has been held every August except in 2011 since the day it began in 1981.

The carnival has grown around the historic Sensoji Temple in the old section of the city that celebrates a huge number of traditional and cultural festivals each year.

The samba parade that takes place during this time has become the centre of the attraction. Music and laughter will fill the air, while all people would be enjoying the festive atmosphere to the fullest.

Among all this happiness, there would be teams of competitors competing to win the first prize. Teams would come up with their own choreography, costumes and choose their favourite music and sway lightly and magically according to its tune.

The costumes and props would add a burst of colour to the event and the music will liven up the already enthusiastic and happy surroundings. All the streets of Asakusa would come alive and mesmerise any visitor.

More than 3,500 Samba music lovers will fly to Japan during this season to take part in the event. The sight of more than 500,000 sightseers would be a very common thing each year.

There would be different food stalls and vendors who will provide bites while you enjoy this cultural and entertaining festival.

Do not forget to click some of the most interesting and wonderful moments of this festival while you keep enjoying every second of it. You might even find yourself swaying to the lively rhythms that would dominate the surroundings.
