IF YOU'RE not too keen on paying for a gym or yoga membership, why not try walking?

Walking is a cheap and effective alternative for maintaining good overall health.

Not only does walking help to increase a person's physical activity, but it also helps to control weight gain, reported HealthNewsDigest.com.

Other important health benefits include improving cholesterol levels, lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of type-2 diabetes and improving mood.

According to the report, walking 6,000 steps daily can improve a person's health, while 10,000 steps a day can help with weight loss.

Research has shown that women had 40 per cent less body fat, and smaller waist and hip measurements, when they averaged more than 10,000 steps a day.

They were also 10cm to 15cm narrower than those who walked fewer than 6,000 steps daily.

Ms Maureen Smith, nurse manager of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in the United States, explained that for most people, 2.2km is equal to 2,000 steps or a 20-minute walk.

"People are always amazed to learn that walking just one mile (1.6km) a day can burn 100 calories," she said.

"That averages out to a weight loss of about 4.5kg in a year, and that is without changing your eating habits."

Walkingmama Stroller Fitness  – walking as a full body workout right on the go<br>It’s time for my body to work out and for my mind to rest. I walk to get training. It’s my way of  sport. I enjoy this time – my child is sleeping in the stroller while I walk and feel free, sporty and becaming happier with every step.
