Meghan LaPlante, 14, said she and her father pulled in this blue lobster off the coast of Maine in the United States from one of their traps last week, Reuters reported.

The blue colour is the result of a rare genetic mutation that causes the lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein.

Scientists estimate the blue colouring occurs in only one out of two million lobsters.

Meghan, who named the crustacean Skyler, said she did not want the lobster to be hurt or cooked, so it would be donated to the Maine State Aquarium, CNN reported on Tuesday. The aquarium expects to display the blue lobster soon.

The lobster was delicious. It came cold on a bed of fresh lettuce with a lemon and oil dressing, just a few hours after being hauled in from the Gulf of Maine.
