In medieval Europe aging Countess Elisabeth rules harshly with the help of lover Captain Dobi. Finding that washing in the blood of young girls makes her young again she gets Dobi to start abducting likely candidates.

The Countess - pretending to be her own daughter - starts dallying with a younger man, much to Dobi's annoyance. One of Hammer films most legendary actresses was Ingrid Pitt. She made three films with the studio: The Vampire Lovers, Countess Dracula, and Beyond the Rave. Pitt was born Ingoushka Petrov on November 21, 1937 in Warsaw Poland. She endured the concentration camp during world war two. Her harsh ordeal is widely known as she endured torture and rape. She came through it and made her way to Berlin. There she met an American soldier and married him. On to California and Europe to try her hand at acting.

In Countess Dracula, her character was based on the legend of Countess Elizabeth Bathory. And once again Pitt was unbelievable in the role. I've seen both of these films and they are some of my favorite horror films of all time. I have not seen Beyond The Rave. Pitt would continue on in horror films through-out the 70's including The House That Dripped Blood and The Wicker Man (another fave of mine).

She was married three times and has one daughter Steffanie Pitt, also an actress. Ingrid stood only 5'4" and passed away in 2010 at the age of 73.

She strengthened her scream queen status even further appearing in the Amicus horror anthology film The House That Dripped Blood and the classic Wicker Man (and, no, it’s not the one with Nicholas Cage).

To stay in her youthful state, it begins to require ever more victims and the trail or bloodless corpses is beginning to arouse suspicion. To throw locals off the scent, she assumes the identity of her daughter, Ilona (Lesley-Anne Down) who has been absent for some time, squirreled away by her mother in a hut in the forest, lest anyone find it odd that they are surprisingly similar age.

PHOTO: It is clear that the director put a lot of thought into the tone and mood of the piece. Even though the film is not as graphic as it could have been, it does in essence become somewhat of a dark-hearted thriller with macabre elements

When she meets the young Lt. Imre Toth (Sandor Elès), the son of a famous general who is eager to similarly make his mark, she pretends to be her daughter Ilona to marry him, to the despair of Dobi.

Whilst having sexual affair with young Lt. Imre Toth, Countess Elisabeth Nodosheen kidnaps her daughter, Ilona (Lesley-Anne Down). She takes over her persona. as a cover for her crimes while in her rejuvenated state. Then

she goes to bed with the handsome young man, not caring about the mounting jealousy of her servant and lover, Capt. Dobi (Nigel Green).

But castle historian Fabio (Maurice Denham) grows suspicious. The resident of the castle library, Fabio (Maurice Denham), begins to suspect something dodgy is afoot, not least when he nearly stumbles upon an unfortunate meeting between local busty prostitute, Ziza (Andrea Lawrence), Toth and the Countess, an encounter which Ziza doesn’t fare well in. Eventually she kills the prostitute, Ziza, to maintain some secrets, but it doesn't help.

But her daughter Ilona arrives home and Julie that was her former nanny has to decide what to do to protect her. Bathorys plan goes awry when she runs out of blood and begins to change back into her former self.

Elisabeth grows old again and tries to kill her daughter but kills Toth instead. Elisabeth, Dobi, and her maid are sentenced to death for their crimes and are last seen awaiting the hangman in their cell. In the last scene a peasant curses her as "devil woman" and "Countess Dracula".

"Countess Dracula" is another great production of Hammer, my favorite studio of horror movies when I was a teenager. This story is based on the Hungarian Countess Erzsebet, who killed many virgin women and bathed with their blood. This film is not a vampire or a frightening movie, as an unaware viewer may be induced based on its inappropriate title. Indeed it is a dramatic and theatrical horror story, very well constructed and supported by a great cast, highlighting Ingrid Pitt in a double role of a fresh young woman, and also a very bitter and evil old woman. The camera is excellent in the scenes when Countess Elisabeth becomes old again.

Ingrid Pitt (21 November 1937 – 23 November 2010)
PHOTO: Ingrid Pitt (21 November 1937 – 23 November 2010) was a Polish-British actress best known for her work in horror films of the 1960s and 1970s. Pitt was born Ingoushka Petrov in Warsaw, Poland, to a German father of Russian descent and a Polish Jewish mother. During World War II, she and her family were imprisoned in a concentration camp. She survived and, in Berlin in the 1950s, married an American soldier and moved to California.

After her marriage failed, she returned to Europe, but after a small role in a film, she headed to Hollywood where she worked as a waitress while trying to make a career in the movies. Her natural hair colour was brown, though she frequently lightened it to blonde.

It was her work with Hammer Film Productions that elevated her to cult figure status. She starred as "Carmilla/Mircalla" in The Vampire Lovers (1970), based on Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's novella Carmilla, and played the title role in Countess Dracula (1971), based on the legends about Countess Elizabeth Báthory. Pitt also appeared in the Amicus horror anthology film The House That Dripped Blood (1971) and had a small part in The Wicker Man (1973). Pitt also appeared in Where Eagles Dare opposite Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood.

Vampire Lovers is a 1970 film, directed by Roy Ward Baker; It is a horror film based on the novel 'Carmilla' by Sheridan Le Fanu. An American International Pictures (AIP), Hammer Films.
Carmilla carried out the slow seduction of Madeleine Smith’s character, and the level of sexuality in vampire films went through the roof.

In order to believe the story, the audience has to accept that the 33-year-old Pitt is posing as her 19 year old on-screen daughter. Clearly the actress is not 19 years old, but she does successfully manage to exhibit - when posing as the younger carnation of the Countess - the energy of youthful glamour, and giddy excitement at her new lease of life. Her alter-ego, on the other hand, the wizened old Countess - with a make-up that reportedly took over three hours to assemble each day, and was prone to damage during filming - is sneering, callous and cruel by contrast.

The late illustrator was not only an inspiration but also a friend of Rodriguez's, and alternate-movie-poster enthusiasts may be familiar with their one collaboration while Frazetta was alive: an awesome From Dusk till Dawn painting. It's too bad the artist won't be able to do the official one-sheet for this new movie -- not to mention it's too bad he's not around to work on the movie itself either.
