EVEN before Joseph  Isaac Schooling touched down in Singapore early this morning from Brazil, companies here have already lined up ways to celebrate his Olympic triumph.

About 17,000 ComfortDelgro taxis have started displaying "Our Pride J Schooling" on the taxi rooftop sign since yesterday afternoon. The signs will be shown for one week.

The 21-year-old swimmer is slated to arrive at Belt 42, Terminal 3 of Changi Airport at 5.30am on Singapore Airlines flight SQ67 today.

He is expected to be welcomed by a contingent of fans, sports officials and members and affiliates of the Singapore Swimming Association.

The transport company is also offering a $10 discount for the first 1,000 passengers who book trips to Changi Airport this morning to welcome Schooling home.

The promotion is available on the ComfortDelGro app and customers need to key in the code 5039.

The numbers represent the record time of 50.39sec he clocked in the 100m butterfly final on Saturday morning.

We can savour the sight of our national athlete on the podium, witness the Singapore flag being raised above the rest, and hear Majulah Singapura being played once. We can look back on the morning of 13 August 2016 as the moment that started it all.
Perhaps, the government would have decided that winning an Olympic medal is actually a form of National Service, and allow them to carry on training.

He won gold, beating swimming legend Michael Phelps and breaking the Olympic record too.

Singapore Airlines also gave Schooling a champion's send-off at the airport in Rio de Janeiro before he boarded the plane.

There was a cake and champagne, and he was awarded one million KrisFlyer miles by the airline.

The celebration continued at 30,000 feet in the air, said The Straits Times editor-at-large Han Fook Kwang.

Colin Schooling, the father of Singapore’s first Olympic Champion Joseph Schooling, was unable to travel to Rio to watch his son compete in the Olympics.
Hence, Schooling made what could well be his first phone call to his dad after the men’s 100m Butterfly Olympic gold medal ceremony.
This moment was nicely captured by Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development and the President of the Singapore National Olympic Council.

Thirty minutes into the flight, the pilot announced Schooling's presence on board and that the champagne would be served to all passengers to celebrate his historic win.

Back in Singapore, Canopy Garden Dining, a restaurant at Bishan Park, offered a 50.39 per cent discount for brunch and dinner, it said on its Facebook page.

Fast-food giant McDonald's will be giving out free chicken McNuggets at nearly all its branches today from 11am to celebrate his win.

Lovely reaction from Schooling’s dad Colin (third from the right):
“I am incredibly proud of Joseph, and I know his supporters are too. This is why he got into swimming, to be the best. There were challenges along the way, but he overcame them and continues to become better at what he does. I’m really proud of my son. He’s a competitor and we can look forward to even greater things to come. We’d like to thank members of the swimming fraternity, his past and current coaches, support team, fellow athletes and supporters, your support has made all the difference and helped him get to where he is now.

McDonald's was also one of the companies that took out full-page advertisements in The Straits Times to congratulate Schooling, along with Singtel and Brand's essence of chicken.

Schooling and his family will also be attending Parliament later today.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called Schooling to invite him to the session personally.

The House plans to move a motion to congratulate Schooling on his golden feat and express support for Team Singapore athletes.

There are also plans to take Schooling on an open-top bus ride although that is dependent on his schedule.

And… Schooling’s Gold medal moment

Mind you, all this started with a 50.39sec swim, which was the result of years of selfless parental love and sacrifice. 天下父母心都是一样的。(Tiān xià fù mǔ xīn dōu shì yī yàng de). All Parents are the same.

To all Parents, Uncles and Aunties, Now is the time, Now is the moment, Our Ah boy has make it.

How proud Joseph made us feel and how his win lifted the country on Saturday morning.
Thank you, Colin, May and Joseph.
