A mysterious island located around 72km from Buenos Aires has got some supernatural explorers and filmmakers bouncing off the walls in excitement.

When viewed on Google Earth (34°15'07.8"s, 58°49'47.4"W), the spherical island, which is now referred to as "The Eye", appears to take the shape of a perfect circle and is surrounded by a thin channel of water within a larger circle. Both circles have been described to be so perfect that many wonder if they are natural occurrences.

The outside diametre is about 119 metres, and images documented by Google Earth since 2003 show that the island seems to be able to rotate on its own axis.

After finding out about the island, a group of filmmakers decided to dig deeper and found that locals have had plenty of supernatural encounters relating to the island. A handful believe the island is a secret alien base.

Now, the group which includes Argentinian filmmaker Sergio Neuspiller, has started a crowdfunding project on Kickstarter in hopes of starting an expedition to the island and discovering the truth behind its mysteries.

"The [supernatural] stories are unrelated to each other but they share one thing in common - they all occur on a mysterious island," Neuspiller said in a video posted on the group's Kickstarter page.

Some of the questions the group are trying to answer include: What caused it? How does it move? Why do aquatic plants not grow and cover it? How does it remain undeformed for so long?

If they succeed in raising funds for the expedition, the group will document their adventure and collect samples from the area for testing.

But it would not be the first time the group has attempted to reach the inaccessible island.

On the first attempt, they ended up 823m away from the circle and had to give up as the treacherous route exhausted them. They however, went back a second time and found the island.


Finally, in their second attempt and after eight hours of hiking, they stumbled upon the thin channel (pictured) that surrounds 'The Eye'.

Describing the sight as "amazing and extremely strange", Neuspiller said that they discovered that the water was "incredibly clear and cold", which is unusual for the area. Not only that, the bottom was also hard, unlike the marshy swamp around it.

Incidentally, ufologists believe that the studies do not need to spend. They no longer believe them that the island – a cover of the hatch of the spacecraft or the entrance to a secret undersea alien base.
