A professional scare actor, Miss Yeung, 28, has been spending her weekend nights haunting people as Malice - one of the seven "Sinisters" - at this year's Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) at Universal Studios Singapore.

When asked how she deals with all the growling and screaming, she laughed as she told The New Paper: "Lozenges. I spam lozenges so that I can continue scaring."

Malice is a vengeful spirit who roams the Death Mall, one of the five haunted houses at HHN, and she has been featured prominently in the advertisements and promotional materials for the event.

"I hide in dark recesses and corners to jump and scare the guests, mostly screaming at them and giving the illusion that I am trying to kill them," Miss Yeung said.

The secret, she said, lies in the make-up and costume, which helps to "bring the character to life".

It takes a team of two to three people 90 minutes to get her into the make-up and costume. Later, they spend an hour to remove them.

"The make-up team do an amazing job. It is magic. With all the make-up, I do not even look like me anymore," Miss Yeung said.

She let on that the most difficult part is staying in character.

"Before I face the public, I have to get into character mentally. I am not me anymore," she said.

"Even if a situation is funny, like someone has a big reaction, I cannot laugh, because Malice will not react with laughter."

As for guests who might be cynical or even make a mockery of her scare-acting, Miss Yeung said she simply moves on to someone else, because "there will always be screams to be found".

SECURITY
Safety, she added, is always a priority. If someone tries to hit her, she retreats. The minders who accompany her and the guests are an additional level of security too.

"You can pick out those who come to the event with bad intentions, so we look out for guests who might behave inappropriately and are alert," Miss Yeung said.

She works in 45-minute shifts, doing about four or five shifts each night. It does get draining, but she said the satisfaction of creating an unforgettable experience for the guests keeps her going.

"When you see people enjoying themselves and being in the moment, it is most fulfilling. I get to take the whole story to them and bring them into another world they really believe in," she said.

She and the other scare actors - almost 500 of them - will be performing on weekend nights until Oct 29.

Miss Yeung performs as other characters at the theme park too, but she feels lucky to play Malice, as getting to scare people happens only once a year.

"People assume it is easy to jump out and scream, but they do not know that behind the scenes, there is a lot of hard work and effort.

"It takes a lot to bring out the whole show, and I am glad I get to be a part of it," she said.

Secrets of the trade

  • The first step is always the hardest. Do not worry about what people might think of you when you are starting out as a scare actor. Just enjoy the experience.
  • Staying in character is important, and it is essential to not break character, even when there are unexpected reactions.
  • A background in performing arts helps, as being a scare actor means putting on a show for a roving and mobile audience.

The National Steps Challenge The New Paper Big Walk this year will not be the first for retired postal service employee Kanan Gunasagaran.

He joined the Big Walk in 2000 and 2003, when it was held at the National Stadium.

Mr Gunasagaran, 82, told The New Paper: "Sadly, I do not have many photographs of these events.

"Back when I was younger and more fit, I used to walk and jog between 5km and 6km daily.

"But due to knee problems, I now cover the same distance three or four times a week instead. The exercise keeps me alert, fit and healthy."

He wants to "encourage friends, and especially my children and grandchildren, to join me in my walks and jogs".

He said: "This is especially since the Prime Minister (Mr Lee Hsien Loong) has urged all Singaporeans, in his National Day Rally speech, to have healthy lifestyles and fight diabetes.

"I am looking forward to the Big Walk as it will be a great time of fun with friends and family."

Mr Lim Hoo Hong, 73, is taking part in this year's Big Walk with his wife and son.

It is his first Big Walk, but he is confident that he can complete the course.

Mr Lim, who is self-employed, said: "I have been careful about my health and lifestyle for over 30 years. I walk about 7km every day and practise taiji with my friends every morning."

Retiree Phang Chin Foo, 78, first took part in the Big Walk in 2000, and this year's will be his 10th one.

"I do not let my age get in the way of a healthy lifestyle. I have always believed in eating healthy food, and eating less processed food," he said.

"I want to stay healthy as it will be very expensive if one falls sick in Singapore."

Mr Phang will be taking part in this year's Big Walk with two friends, aged 68 and 75.

He said: "The Big Walk is a healthy and leisurely activity that everybody can do."

Body composition
PHOTO: Body composition
The body mass index (BMI) or Quetelet index is a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of an individual. The BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is universally expressed in units of kg/m2, resulting from mass in kilograms and height in metres.
To have a BMI under 18.5 is considered very underweight and possibly malnourished. However, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is within a healthy weight range for young and middle-aged adults. Furthermore, a BMI between 25.0 and 29.9 is classed as overweight. Finally, a BMI over 30 is considered obese.
Note that given the same BMI, the body on the left is in a better shape.

Award-winning actress Jeanette Aw (欧萱, Ōu xuān) is leaving her long-time talent agency Hype Records-Artiste Network to be her own agent.

In an Oct 12 post on Facebook, the 38-year-old artiste said her decision "was deliberated upon over time" and that the universe was "showing me it was time to move on".

"Going solo. Yes, it's official. No longer contracted to both Hype Records-Artiste Networks and Mediacorp," she added.

Aw, whose decision comes at the height of her career, also told The Straits Times: "This decision not to renew my contract with Hype and Mediacorp has been a thought I've had for quite some time.

"I guess at times I feel like I've hit a plateau in my career and I need new challenges. And believe it or not, I believe that when the right moment comes, you will know when it is time to move on.

Hands-free fare payment trial in 2018

Source Website: http://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore/hands-free-fare-payment-trial-2018
By The New Paper, 13 October 2017 at 06:00 am

The test fare gates will be in areas with senior citizens.

A hands-free payment system - which allows commuters to breeze through fare gates without using travel cards - will be tested at selected MRT stations next year.

Fares will be paid automatically via a commuter's mobile device using Bluetooth technology or with a radio-frequency identification card. These devices or cards can be kept in a bag or pocket, and do not need to be in close contact with a reader.

A prototype of this hands-free fare gate was displayed yesterday at the Future of Transport showcase in the Sands Expo and Convention Centre at Marina Bay Sands.

For the trial, test fare gates will be deployed at MRT stations near support centres for the physically disabled or in areas with many senior citizens, The Straits Times understands. The aim is to see if the hands-free system allows such users to go through gates with greater ease.
