Put a spring in your step and keep the excess weight off through healthy eating during the New Year. The key to staying healthy.

CHINESE New Year is often a time of excess for many, especially when it comes to eating. During the 15 days of celebrations, people tend to feast or snack excessively.

Coupled with a possible reduction in physical activity during this period, one can easily gain 0.5kg to 1kg by consuming an additional 500kcal every day.

Undesired weight gain, which may lead to one becoming overweight or even obese, can increase the risk of getting diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and hypertension.

Paying attention to your intake versus how much you exercise can help to combat undesired weight gain.

Prevention is the key. Being mindful of what you are eating, with a focus on eating healthily, can help you to enjoy the festive season and your meals without having to compromise on your health.

You should still eat regular meals when you go visiting; do not skip meals or substitute meals with snacks.

Start the day with a wholesome, wholegrain breakfast and avoid going visiting on an empty stomach to prevent overeating or overindulging in festive treats.

Here are more tips to help you this festive season:
Drink at least eight glasses of water - inadequate water intake may give you a false sense of hunger and result in overeating and excessive snacking.

Take smaller portions of New Year goodies.

If it's impolite to say "no", learn to say "later" if you are not keen to indulge in a particular goody.

Cut treats like bak kwa into bite-sized pieces and limit yourself to a fixed number of pieces per day.

Use a bowl to hold festive treats instead of eating from the whole tub to avoid overeating.

Share festive treats with friends and relatives.

Do not buy too much food or snacks to avoid overindulging.

Limit alcohol intake - alcohol is high in calories and excessive consumption can be harmful to your health.

Make up for it with exercise - while those treats are irresistible and you may think that such festive periods will come and go, it is still important for you to work those extra calories off!

See how much exercise you will need to put in for the amount of goodies you consume, with this table of popular goodies and the calories they pack.

Remember, there is no need to forsake all the goodies this festive period, but doing everything in moderation is always the key to staying healthy.

So put a spring in your step and keep the excess weight off through healthy eating during the New Year.

How to Survive Valentine's Day after a Break up

Maybe it's just coincidence or maybe it's the pressure of Valentine's Day, but the weeks leading up to Valentine's Day is a very common period for break ups. As sod's law would have it, the most common season for breaking up happens to also be the most difficult time to get over a failed relationship!

If you're one of those in this predicament this Valentine's season, take comfort in the knowledge that you're likely not the only one and that time will heal all wounds, be it Valentine's Day or not.

Here's what you can do to survive Valentine's Day after a break up.

[1] In order to accept that your relationship has ended, you need to understand that it was a long time coming. Relationships that end on February 14th did not suddenly unravel on February 13th. Valentine's Day

itself has no significance on how good or bad your relationship was and it was going to end sooner or later anyway. And no, the number 13 isn’t an unlucky number either.

[2] Even after you've accepted the fact that it's all over, moving on can be difficult. When Valentine's Day looms, you will find yourself missing your ex. The constant reminder of romance in the form of decorations in shopping malls, lovey dovey couples on the streets and shops selling beautiful bouquets will be everywhere.

Take comfort in the knowledge that you're likely not the only one and that time will heal all wounds, be it Valentine's Day or not.

http://my.pclady.com.cn/d/1114694.html

[3] My advice is, no matter how much you miss him, do not contact your ex under any circumstances. If you can’t bring yourself to outright de-friend him on Facebook, then at the very least hide his Facebook updates.

Whatever he is doing on Valentine's Day, you don’t want to know.

[4] For good measure, I would also avoid going out with sickening couple friends who are obsessed with each other. These people are difficult to stomach even when you are in a good relationship! If you feel up to it, you may like to spend Valentine's Day with a group of single friends. However, if it was me, I would rather rent a movie, and stay home that evening munching on my comfort food. If you cry, then cry your heart out.

You're only human. This is part of the grieving process.

[5] Do not go on a random date with “whoever” just because you're lonely – it will make you feel much worse.

I made that mistake once. I accepted the date because I had recently broken up and I didn't want to be alone on Valentine's Day. I spent the evening awkwardly dodging romantic gestures by a guy I was absolutely not attracted to. At the end of the evening, he even tried to kiss me! I felt like such a failure.

[6] Take your mind off the occasion by indulging in something you enjoy. You could buy yourself a new book or gadget or join an interesting fitness class. Just because you're single, there's no reason to be miserable.

[7] Don't punish yourself! The bottom line is, don't make Valentine's any bigger than it needs to be. Do something that makes you happy.

CLOSURE finally arrived for the parents of Nigel and Donavan Yap, nearly a year to the day their two young sons were killed by a cement-mixer truck in Tampines.

The driver of the truck, 57-year-old Munir Mohd Naim, was sentenced to two weeks' jail yesterday. He was also banned from driving all vehicles for five years upon release from prison.

Closure was the word used by Mr Francis Yap and his wife, Madam Suliani Ang, when they spoke to reporters about the sentence at their new home in Choa Chu Kang, one day before the first death anniversary of their sons.

But forgetting is an entirely different thing.

Even though their textbooks and clothes were given away, shelves in a room of the four-room flat are adorned with their boys' favourite toys, including a trio of Alvin and the Chipmunks figurines.

"Alvin is supposed to be me, and the other two are the boys... We were known as the Yap brothers," said Mr Yap, 42.

The Yaps tried going on holiday last March to Taiwan to ease the pain. But by the third day,
Madam Ang, 39, begged Mr Yap to take her home. She wanted to go to the columbarium in Mandai where their sons' ashes are kept.

Singaporeans grieved with the family when Nigel, 13, and Donavan, seven, died instantly when the truck ran into them in Tampines Street 45 on Jan 28 last year.

The accident also sparked road-safety concerns about heavy vehicles.

A year on, Mr Yap says he has already forgiven the driver.

He recounted a nightmare he had some 21 years ago, when he dreamt that he had run over a child with his army vehicle.

"I got off and was holding a bleeding kid in my arms... I woke up sweating profusely and shaking...so I can understand how the (cement truck) driver must have felt," he said.
Today, the couple plan to visit the columbarium, together with their family and church pastor.

They visit their sons there at least once a month. On some nights, they said the boys appear to them in their dreams, dressed in white.

"In my dreams, I am crying by myself. Then they appear and I embrace them. They have grown bigger," said Mr Yap.

Madam Ang added: "They don't say a word, but will smile and hug me. They look joyful and we believe they are in heaven, without care or worry."
