PM: The first of our founding fathers is no more. He inspired us, gave us courage, and brought us here. To many Singaporeans, and indeed others too, Lee Kuan Yew was Singapore.

FLAGS flew at half-mast across the island yesterday, as the body of Singapore's founding father was brought to rest at the Istana, with the country entering the post-Lee Kuan Yew era.

A week-long period of national mourning has been declared, with today marking the second day of a private family wake at Sri Temasek, the official residence of the Prime Minister.

This will be followed by his body lying in state in Parliament House until Saturday, for the public to pay their last respects. A state funeral will be held on Sunday at 2pm at the University Cultural Centre in Kent Ridge, followed by a private cremation at the Mandai Crematorium.

Mr Lee did not live in Sri Temasek, but spent many happy moments taking strolls on the Istana's green lawns with his wife of 63 years, Kwa Geok Choo, who died in 2010, reported The Straits Times.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong issued a statement before dawn announcing the passing of his 91-year-old father at Singapore General Hospital, where he had been hospitalised since Feb 5 with severe pneumonia.

"The first of our founding fathers is no more. He inspired us, gave us courage, and brought us here," said PM Lee in a live TV address, choking back tears. "To many Singaporeans, and indeed others too, Lee Kuan Yew was Singapore."

After news broke of Mr Lee's death, hundreds of Singaporeans, some weeping, visited the gates of the Istana to leave flowers and cards, and sign a condolence board.

When the hearse pulled in to the Istana, the crowd broke into spontaneous applause and some shouted "Thank you, Mr Lee Kuan Yew".

P. Pusparani, 57, a long-time resident of Tanjong Pagar, where Mr Lee was MP since 1955, told The Straits Times: "When I saw the coffin, no words could express my grief. It's so sad just to think that it'll be the last time he enters the Istana."

A tearful Sharon Tan, 39, and her five-year-old son Ryan Mackay were among the first to arrive.

"I brought Ryan here to share an important part of Singapore's history with him and help him understand why mummy is so sad," she told Agence France-Presse.
