Singaporeans may top the table in a lot of things, but when it comes to doing absolutely nothing (i.e. 'nua-ing') on beach holidays, it may be surprising to learn that we are among the best at it as well.

'nua-ing' means to do absolutely nothing. Lift the legs and rest.

According to the Expedia Flip Flop report for 2016, which surveyed 300 Singaporean respondents among travellers around the world, 82 per cent of us prefer to "do nothing" when on a beach vacation, above the global average of 74 percent.

But it's not just about doing nothing, Singaporeans enjoy using WiFi to browse the Internet (68 per cent) taking long walks on the beach (62 per cent), and watching the sunrise or sunset (45 per cent), or just people-watching (46 per cent).

We are also more likely to go on beach holidays with our family members (73 percent) and use the down-time as a chance to catch-up and bond.

This is a trait we share with fellow Southeast Asians, with 74 per cent of Malaysians, and 79 per cent of Thais also opting to take their family members to the beach.

To prepare for a beach vacation, 45 per cent of Singapore respondents said they would shop for swimwear. On average, we spend $82 before a trip -- no mention of what on, but one would assume it would be on the aforementioned swimwear.

But unlike 32 per cent of Thai travellers who would make sure they are body-ready before hitting the beach, 88 per cent of Singaporean respondents would never postpone a vacation just to get in shape.

Most surprisingly, a fear of sharks (38 per cent) is what would make us turn away from the lure of the water.

This, along with a fear of theft (38 per cent), worries about bad weather (15.2 per cent), and a fear of drowning (13.4 per cent), would make us reconsider a beach destination.

Funnily enough, Hong Kong-ers (53 per cent) are the most afraid of shark attacks and would avoid swimming entirely because of it.
