Reflection - The safety of the godly (Psalm 121)

From Matthew Henry Commentary on the Whole Bible (Concise), Bible Study Tools

Shall I depend upon the strength of the hills?
PHOTO: Shall I depend upon the strength of the hills? No; my confidence is in God only. We must lift up our eyes above the hills and look to God who makes all earthly things. This psalm teaches us to comfort ourselves in the Lord, when difficulties and dangers are greatest. He will take care that his people shall not fall. The Lord shall prevent the evil we feared, sanctify, remove, or lighten them.

Psalm 121, A song of ascents

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains - where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip - he who watches over you will not slumber;

4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you - the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm - he will watch over your life;

8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

As humans a lot of times when faced with tough situations, we easily run to people or other sources in hopes that they can help solve our problems.
PHOTO: As humans a lot of times when faced with tough situations, we easily run to people or other sources in hopes that they can help solve our problems. Instead of running to The One who Created all and knows all things, we like to run to creation for comfort or protection.
David, knows this feeling very well. Looking back at all that he had gone through, had he relied on the advice of man and not tune his ears on The Lord’s guidance, he would have loss his blessings and God’s trust in leading His people.

We must not rely upon men and means, instruments and second causes.
Shall I depend upon the strength of the hills? upon princes and great men? No; my confidence is in God only. Or, we must lift up our eyes above the hills; we must look to God who makes all earthly things to us what they are. We must see all our help in God; from him we must expect it, in his own way and time.

Where My Help Comes From
PHOTO: Where My Help Comes From
"My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." (Psalm 121:2). We must look to God who makes all earthly things to us what they are. We must see all our help in God; from him we must expect it, in his own way and time. We need to open up THE BOOK meaning the Bible, to truly get the help that we seek because all help comes from the Lord.

This psalm teaches us to comfort ourselves in the Lord, when difficulties and dangers are greatest. It is almighty wisdom that contrives, and almighty power that works the safety of those that put themselves under God's protection. He is a wakeful, watchful Keeper; he is never weary; he not only does not sleep, but he does not so much as slumber.

God doesn’t say, 'I can’t help you now, I need a rest! Please don’t wake Me up when I’m sleeping.'
PHOTO: God doesn’t say, “I can’t help you now, I need a rest! Please don’t wake Me up when I’m sleeping.” God is never too busy for us. He is always ready and eager to care for you and answer your prayers.
"He will not let your foot slip - he who watches over you will not slumber" (Psalm 121:3).

Under this shade they may sit with delight and assurance. He is always near his people for their protection and refreshment. The right hand is the working hand; let them but turn to their duty, and they shall find God ready to give them success. He will take care that his people shall not fall. Thou shalt not be hurt, neither by the open assaults, nor by the secret attempts of thine enemies. The Lord shall prevent the evil thou fearest, and sanctify, remove, or lighten the evil thou feeblest (powerless).

He will preserve the soul, that it be not defiled by sin, and disturbed by affliction; he will preserve it from perishing eternally. He will keep thee in life and death; going out to thy labour in the morning of thy days, and coming home to thy rest when the evening of old age calls thee in.

The LORD will preserve you from all evil: He will preserve your soul.
PHOTO: “The LORD will preserve you from all evil: He will preserve your soul. The LORD will preserve you when you go out and when you come in from this time forth, and even for ever more.” God is always willing to help you to do what’s right. When you feel tempted to do something you know isn’t right, ask God for help, and He will give you the strength to do what is right and to walk away from doing what is wrong. You can trust that God will always be there for you!  (Psalm 121:5-7)

It is a protection for life. The Spirit, who is their Preserver and Comforter, shall abide with them for ever. Let us be found in our work, assured that the blessings promised in this psalm are ours.

Dear Lord,  We pray that whatever situation we may be going through, hardships that seem impossible to overcome, we lay them before Your throne and ask for Your help. Let us be amazed by Your power as those situations turn around in our favor and success. Let us be found in our work, assured that the blessings and protection for life, promised in this psalm are ours. Through Lord Jesus Christ, we prayed. Amen!
