There Is Hope When You Are Beyond Hope

There is One who knows your heart inside and out, and knows exactly how to fill it with joy when nothing else satisfies. He is God. He also understands a broken heart, a lonely heart, and an empty heart. God can meet your emotional needs because He knows you intimately and invites you to pour out your heart before Him (Psalm 62:8).

If you are dreading Valentine’s Day you are not alone.

Every year I talk with women, read loads of emails, and even receive hand-written letters from women who are lonely in love, disappointed from unmet expectations, or simply tired of the loneliness they feel on a day designed to celebrate love.

Broken heart, a lonely heart, and an empty heart especially on that day that is mean for love.

Whether you’re single, married, divorced, or widowed, you may feel like a woman who walks alone. But there is One who knows your heart inside and out, and knows exactly how to fill it with joy when nothing else satisfies.

If you are dreading Valentine’s Day you are not alone because it is also associated with death while bringing happiness to couples.
PHOTO: If you are dreading Valentine’s Day you are not alone because it is also associated with death while bringing happiness to couples.
Sometime around 270 A.D., the Roman Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage because he believed single men made better soldiers. St. Valentine defied this order and continued to marry Christian couples in secret.
St. Valentine may have been two different people. One St. Valentine was beheaded near Rome by the emperor for performing Christian marriages, while another was the Bishop of Terni, who was also martyred by Claudius II.
There was also a female St. Valentine, or St. Valentina as she's now remembered, was martyred for her faith in 308 A.D., along with another saint named Thea.
Many recognised St. Valentine as the patron saint of courtship and marriage, but Catholic tradition also considers him the saint of beekeeping and travel.
In the early 1800's an excavation in a catacomb near Rome produced several bones and relics thought to belong to St. Valentine. Currently, the flower adorned skull of St. Valentine can be seen on display in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedio, Rome. [2]

Scripture tells us Jesus our High Priest is one who can sympathize with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15). Not only can He help us when we are being tempted because He was tempted too, but He can relate to our sorrows because He lived life on this earth, as well. And because He is God and knows us inside out (Psalm 139), I believe He also understands a broken heart, a lonely heart, and an empty heart.

Jesus our High Priest is one who can sympathize with our weaknesses because He also had been tempted before.

So take heart. You have a God who can meet your emotional needs because He knows you intimately and invites you to pour out your heart before Him (
Psalm 62:8).

Pour out your heart before Him (Psalm 62:8).

Like everyone else, I have precious memories. I have the tears that were born secret and that secret remained over time. I smile secretly to someone with hope and desire but now all is stolen mercilessly. I have pain and anger hidden in a corner of the soul that often comes to light, giving voice to a side of my plight. I am so tired. I have dreams and hopes for your heart. I want to tell you, but fear often holds me back. I need to evaluate many of the things that often escape my soul and heart - one of them is love.

Here is a “pour it out” prayer for the lonely on Valentine’s Day. Say it from your heart and share it with someone who needs to know she is loved.

Lord God, You are the Creator of love and the Author of romance. It was all Your idea in the first place. And therefore, You understand more than anyone else when I feel I am lacking in what others seem to have in abundance.

Dear Lord, love is so unpredictable to me, one moment it can be quiet and serene, and furiously fatal the next. It nearly puts my soul into disorder.

Thank You that You understand the deep desire of my heart for companionship, emotional fulfillment, and physical and emotional intimacy. You made me with a desire to be fully known and loved by another. Help me to see that You know me fully, and understand me more than any other. Comfort me with that assurance on the days when I wish I had someone physically – or emotionally – close to me.

Dear Lord, You understand more than anyone else when I feel I am lacking in what others seem to have in abundance.

Even though You, Lord, can at any time change my circumstances in order to fill the void in my heart, for some reason You have chosen not to. Help me to trust You with what You are withholding from me, perhaps so I will draw closer to You and rely on You more for what I need (Psalm 84:11). Help me to trust You during the times that your “no” is protecting me from what I don’t yet see. Help me to hold onto hope that You really do have my best in mind and Your wisdom is far above mine.

On this day that so many celebrate love, help me to celebrate Your love for me, with a deep knowledge that You love me more than any person on this earth ever will. Help me to find joy in that as I wait for Your best for me. Help me to see Your love for me in every flower that blooms, feel it in every warm ray of sunshine, hear it in every pure and right love song, and experience it in every good and perfect gift I receive (James 1:17).

Thank You that You have searched me and You know me (Psalm 139:1) and that nothing is hidden from You.

Lord, I love that You know all about me. And when You see desires of mine that are not fully in line with Yours, You do not toss me aside. You, instead, send friends my way to love me back to You. You send songs my way that remind me of where I need to be in my relationship with You. You send words my way that remind me that You are the One who opens Your hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing (Psalm 145:16). Lord, take any longing that lies within me that is unhealthy and replace it with a stronger desire for You. And because You tell me to “come boldly to the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16, NKJV) and tell You all that is on my heart, I will not try to hide anything from You. I want to experience intimacy with You the way an honest, transparent love relationship was meant to be experienced.

Thank You, Lord, that You see it all and You love me just the same.

Marriage is commonly used in the Bible as a symbol for the covenant relationship between God and his people. [3]
A wife, holy and pure, a virgin undefiled, loyal and faithful: is that not the desire of a man? And is this not the highest and holiest desire of the Living God, in whose image we are made man? Is a faithful bride not the desire of Christ Jesus, the returning Bridegroom of His Church?
Now the hardness of our hearts urges a wife to dismiss her husband! To the parable of the two degenerate sisters, must we now add another who has called herself, ‘christian?’
The LORD GOD has married you and made you His own! It is a most serious matter that a woman would play the whore and give herself to any other. This is the setting of the parable of the two degenerate sisters in Ezekiel 23. It is the history of God’s chosen ones of Israel and Judah.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus, to your beloved church, the faithful who have not put You away by a bill of divorce. [3]

In the Hebrew Bible, Oholah (אהלה) and Oholibah (אהליבה) (or: Aholah and Aholibah) are pejorative names given by the prophet Ezekiel to Samaria in the Kingdom of Israel and Jerusalem in the kingdom of Judah, respectively. They appear in the Book of Ezekiel, chapter 23.

There is a pun in these names in the Hebrew. Oholah means "her tent", and Oholibah means "my tent is in her". [1]

Ezekiel's rhetoric portrays Oholah and Oholibah, or Samaria and Jerusalem, as the daughters of one mother. Both are said to be "brides of God", and both are guilty of idolatry and of religious and political alliances with Gentile nations. These kingdoms are described as prostitutes and adulteresses, given up to the abominations and idolatries of the Egyptians and Assyrians. Because of Oholah's crimes, she was carried away captive, and ceased to be a kingdom. (Comp. Psalm 78:67–69; 1 Kings 12:25–33; 2 Chr 11:13–16.)

Oholibah saw her sister's punishment, yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister.
PHOTO: Oholibah saw her sister's punishment, yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister. She too lusted after the Assyrians—governors and commanders, warriors in full dress, mounted horsemen, all handsome young men. . . . . . .
She carried on her prostitution openly and exposed her naked body. God turned away from her in disgust, just as He had turned away from her sister. (Ezekiel 23:11-18)

The Hebrew prophets frequently compared the sin of idolatry to the sin of adultery, in a frequently reappearing rhetorical figure. Ezekiel's rhetoric directed against these two allegorical figures is more vivid than most:

"There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.
So you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when in Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breasts fondled.
" (Ezekiel 23:20–21)

A very similar and equally vivid allegory is directed at the city of Jerusalem itself in Ezekiel 16.

Another good example of this allegorical comparison is found in the Book of Hosea.

For their mother has played the whore; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, "I will go after my lovers; they give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink." (Hosea 2:5)

Again, the language is vivid, but it strikingly directs the reader to the issue the prophet has in mind: namely the breaking of a covenantal relationship by repeatedly engaging in the sin of idolatry. The prophets Ezekiel and Hosea saw idol worship and ritual impurity as Israel's primary sin. [2]

Dear Lord, we pray that we do not lusted after the nations and defiled ourself with their idols, inciting your jealous anger against us. Please help us to stop our detestable practices and led a live that is pleasing to you. Help us to become the wife, who is holy and pure, a virgin undefiled, loyal and faithful, the highest and holiest desire of the Living God. We pray that we become the faithful bride desired by Christ Jesus, the returning Bridegroom of His Church. Through Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen!
