While old favourites continued to excite the 25,000-strong crowd, the use of cutting-edge technology also thrilled them at the 52nd National Day Parade (NDP), held at The Float@Marina Bay yesterday.

Intricate drone formations and the use of laser mapping technology drew huge cheers, while the return of the Singapore Armed Forces' Red Lions and fireworks came together to deliver a "show to never forget," as one spectator described it.

If there’s one thing that most of our Primary 5 selves vividly remember at our first-ever National Day Parade, it’s the slick yet graceful landing of our parachuters in the Parade square as though straight of out a Mission Impossible movie.
Sorely missed at the 2015/2016 parade (because of inappropriate weather), our soaring Red Lions will finally be back to tantalise the crowd with an impressive air display. [2]

Mr Jason Ng, 52, loved the parade but said the fireworks were his favourite.

"It is something you expect at every parade, but it never gets old. When you hear the National Day songs playing and see the fireworks, you really feel that this is home, truly, and there is nowhere else," the course trainer told The New Paper.

For some, like 16-year-old Mudzakkir Muhammed, the best segment of the 3½-hour show was one of its oldest features - the march in of the different uniformed groups.

The secondary school student, who was at the parade with friends, said: "When you see the soldiers and officers all marching in time and coming in together, with all their uniforms, it really is special - it is like nothing else."

In a five-minute display, 300 drones took to the skies and moved into various formations against the Marina Bay skyline.

Miss Emelyn Ho, 40, a teacher, said it seemed as if the drones were dancing.

"It took my breath away because it looked so beautiful. Technology was used really well this year. It made the parade feel special," she added.

While the fireworks, military displays - including the salute to national servicemen on the 50th year of National Service - and use of technology were all big hits, other participants, such as the Purple Symphony, also drew praise.

The group, an ensemble of musicians, some of them with special needs, performed to highlight the message of inclusivity, in line with this year's theme of #OneNationTogether.

And even if you're stuck in boarding school, university, or a job stint abroad and not physically present to the witness this year’s celebration, you'll still be able to join in on the parade's magic through a 360-degree live video stream on Youtube and be a part of the conversation on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter via the hashtag #OneNationTogether, #NDP2017, #NDP17, and #SG52.

Salute to the Nation
PHOTO: 127 Squadron - Home of the Stallions (at least 300 of them)
Every National Day, Singaporeans experienced an elevated moment of national pride when they witness the visual spectacle of their state flag being hoisted by the powerful Chinook CH-47 heavy-lift helicopter, flanked by Apaches AH-64 attack-helicopters as it flew by spectators at the floating platform and Marina Bay during the national anthem segment. But unknown to most, the background scene is made possible only through immense effort, detailed logistics and expertly tuned co-ordination by personnel of the air force to execute the event like clockwork.

A successful deployment of the state flag.  A fantastic surreal feeling to see the flag unfolded nicely. We are talking about a flag that is 1.5 times that of a basketball court. The speed at which the flag is being flown requires a skilled and experienced hand – too fast, the flag will rip apart, too slow, it will start to crumple and fold. So if the arriving President reaches slightly late or shake one hand too many, the pace at which the state is being flown into the Bay area, just in time for the National Anthem, can be affected. You can imagine how stressed everyone is.

Every part, plays a part. And this flag rigging methodology is FULLY conceptualized and designed in Singapore  The powerful Chinook was designed and produced in the early 1960s. It is one of the few aircraft of that era – along with the fixed-wing Lockheed C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft – that remain in production and frontline service, with over 1,200 built to date. The helicopter has been sold to 16 nations.
PHOTO: Ah boys to men and our protectors forevermore!
Our national servicemen spend almost a good 2 years of their lives low-key protecting our nation, and it's about time we show our appreciation for their efforts. This NDP, join the spectators in a unified salute to thank all our NSmen, their families, and employers for their dedication to our nation for the past 50 years. [2]
